Comment: "I have been talking with Maggie and Morrie for the past two years about the present state of the fitness industry in the United States and the lack of “true standardization” for personal trainers compared to physiotherapist and the medical profession. The development of higher standards and regulations for the fitness industry is something in which I strongly believe. It is not only important, but vitally necessary. I am both grateful and excited to work with CFES.  I am looking forward to working with Maggie. She possess the same passion and vision to make a difference in the fitness industry by taking it in a new direction. I firmly believe that my unique background, diverse experience in the industry, and expertise in human movement will help CFES fulfill its mission and achieve its goals."

Jodie Pickering     MSc, CFES Educator

Jodie has been involved in sports all her life, deciding to make a career of it when she began coaching young kids after she graduated from high-school. She saw first hand how inactive some kids were becoming and wanted to be able to help them make changes to their lifestyles through education and physical activity. Jodie went on to do her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, and her Masters Degree in Exercise Science at California University. She is a Certified Kinesiologist, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Exercise Physiologist and runs her own training business in Cranbrook, BC.  She currently teaches both the CFES Fitness Knowledge and Weight Training Instructor courses, and is planning to take on the new Personal Trainer course as well. "I love seeing people make positive, healthy changes to their lives and knowing that I had a part in it."

Jodie decided to get involved with CFES because she could see the need for a National Certification.  Having had to change provinces herself she realized how necessary it is to have a certification that is of high quality. Having worked in several gyms she has seen the variation in Trainer and Instructor quality and really believes that there needs to be a new standard set to ensure that clients are getting safe and effective instruction. Jodie is looking forward to the future of CFES, and is excited to be on the Board so she can help them on this journey.

“I am honored to be part of an elite team which represents CFES. I have been a follower of CFES through the years and recognize their high standards for fitness leadership training. I too share the vision and passion of a future of well educated and prepared fitness leaders, equipped to meet the needs of the community in an ethical and responsible manner. Kim Froom     Owner, Phoenix Health & Fitness Club, Kelowna, BC; CSEP CPT, CFES Educator + SAE

As a CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) through CSEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology), she has been involved in fitness training and coaching for over 25 years and now mentors those who are beginning their own journey in the business of health and fitness. She has received awards for her program development through BCRPA and spreads her passion of health into the world of first aid (Red Cross) as she teaches people to take care of others.

"As someone who was brought up to value life and health, Kim's entry into the fitness industry began over 30 year ago.

Phoenix Health & Fitness was approached by gradues of the HKin program at UBC-Okanagan seeking to be employed. What we found was that despite their education there was a piece missing -- the practical experience of being a fitness leader -- in whatever capacity. It was an easy decision to support CFES in its vision of a national certification for fitness leaders. Especially at the university level. To have an opportunity to share the passion of fitness with students studying human movement was incredibly exciting.

I am honoured to be a part of a board that has the vision for the future of fitness in Canada.

Comment: "Being a member of the CFES team has always been easy for me. Over the past 3 decades I’ve seen the trends come and go. I’ve witnessed the standard of care take a back seat to the almighty dollar and I’ve experienced frustration with an apparent lack of accountability and/or responsibility on the part of “leaders” in our field. CFES has always been the exception to these ‘rules’. It’s easy for me to stand in front of a group of new fitness leaders and deliver CFES content because I know that we have not/will not cater to what is ‘trendy’ at the expense of what is in the best interest of our most important resources – our students and our participants. BRAVO!! to CFES for bucking the trends and continuing to stick to what is true and right. THAT’s Leadership!"

Paul Sharp     BHK

Paul Sharp is studying for his Masters degree in Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Paul began working with CFES in 2010 to lay the groundwork for the CanActive program. Paul gained hands on experience working as a Personal Trainer as well as a Fitness Instructor for first year Human Kinetics students. Paul was recently awarded the BCRPA student scholarship for his work on the CanActive program and research surrounding childhood obesity. He is actively involved with the City of Kelowna and is currently employed in the Aquatics Division. He played varsity level soccer for 3 years and was awarded men’s soccer player of the year in 2009. Paul hopes to use his knowledge in exercise physiology and community health promotion to develop programs and policies to offset negative health trends within Canada.

Comment: "In congruence with other fitness professionals across Canada, I believe a higher standard for personal training needs to be developed. Current certifications that require academic competence lack extensive practical training while those that have a large practical or ‘hands-on’ component lack adequate physiological understanding. CFES aims to raise the standard of training in BC and across Canada by creating a unified, credible certification with professional support."
