CFES Group Fitness Instructor Course
Ready to lead your own fitness classes? This hands-on course will give you the practical skills, confidence, and professional standards needed to become a successful group fitness instructor. You’ll learn how to design inclusive and engaging workouts for all fitness levels, use space effectively, and master formations and choreography.
We’ll cover how to incorporate equipment like stability balls, steps, and free weights in both high- and low-impact formats. You’ll also get plenty of real-time practice teaching during the course, plus opportunity for extra teaching opportunities afterwards at the Hangar Fitness Centre.
By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to lead a variety of class formats—including cycle, step, strength, cardio, freestyle, and circuit training. All equipment is provided—just bring water and activewear, because you’ll be up and moving!
Classes will occur in a brightly lit room with windows and mirrors, in a group setting taught by an instructor. You are welcome to show up 5-10 minutes early for class and stop at the Customer Service Desk in the lower foyer of the gym to let them know that you are here for the course. Then you can proceed to Studio 1 where the instructor will check you in based up on your registration.
A practical evaluation with your instructor (not included in your course fee) is required within 60 days of completing the course to complete your certification. This practical evaluation will consist of the student leading a free fitness class to the UBCO community and will be evaulated by the course instructor. Exam fee is $75 for students, $100 for community members.
Prerequisite: Completion of the first year of Human Kinetics, a 100-level Human Anatomy course, or the CFES Fitness Knowledge Course. This course is open to all UBCO Students, Staff, Faculty and community members with the required prerequisite.
Withdrawals prior to January 8th receive a full (minus a $25 administration fee) refund. Withdrawals after this date are subject to additional fees.
